The pump sluice in Aabenraa
From the tower of the pump sluice, you have a beautiful view of the fjord and the town in the heart of Aabenraa.

At Søndre Havnevej 2, between the mouth of the Mølleåen river and the beginning of Aabenraa Fjord, you’ll find the pump sluice, which was inaugurated in 2024.
From the top of the sluice, you have a beautiful view of Aabenraa Marina and the fjord.
The pump sluice’s most important function is to protect the low-lying areas along the river in Aabenraa from flooding when storms hit and water is pushed inland from the fjord.
In addition to its practical function, the pump sluice is also a great destination for an outing, offering beautiful views as well as opportunities for learning and play.
Here you’ll also find a small Archimedes screw pump, which you can operate by hand to see how water is moved. You can also look through the “portholes” and see inside the sluice.
On the Municipality of Aabenraa’s website about the pump sluice, you’ll also find a climate quiz (in Danish), where you can test your knowledge of rising water levels and climate adaptation.
On the website, you’ll also find the “Klimatilpasningsruten” walking route in Aabenraa, where you can explore the different ways climate adaptation is being carried out in Aabenraa. You can find the route here.
