Slivsø – Nature Experiences and Rich Birdlife near Haderslev

Discover the beautiful Slivsø Lake near Hoptrup, where water, nature and an impressive variety of birdlife create the perfect setting for scenic walks and outdoor adventures.

From Farmland to a Bird Paradise

Just a few kilometres from Haderslev, you will find Slivsø Lake, a popular nature area offering excellent opportunities for hiking, birdwatching and activities on the water.

The lake has a fascinating history. In the late 1950s, it was drained to make way for agricultural land. However, in 2004, nature was given the chance to reclaim the area. Slivsø Lake was restored with a water surface covering 164 hectares – equivalent to approximately 300 football pitches.

It did not take long for birds to discover the newly restored wetland. Today, around 180 different bird species have been recorded at the lake, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and birdwatching enthusiasts.

Hiking Around Slivsø Lake

Lace up your hiking boots and explore the marked trails that take you through the varied landscape surrounding the lake.

On the northern shore, you will find a trail of approximately 3.5 km, which brings you close to the water at several points and offers wonderful views of the lake and its birdlife. Along the way, you can visit the former pumping station, which has been converted into an observation tower. From here, you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views across the lake and observe the many birds that inhabit the area.

If you prefer wide-open spaces and beautiful scenery, the approximately 2.5 km trail south of the lake is an excellent choice. Here, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the water and the surrounding rolling hills.

For a longer walk, you can combine the trails via the villages of Diernæs and Hoptrup. The complete circular route is approximately 9 km long and allows you to experience Slivsø Lake from several different perspectives.

Discover Slivsø Lake from the Water

Slivsø Lake can also be explored from the water. Canoeing, kayaking and rowing in non-motorised boats are permitted in the central part of the lake. Enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings at your own pace and discover the landscape from a completely different perspective.

You can also continue your journey along the Hoptrup Å stream, which leads towards Diernæs Bay.
