An old stone bridge with traces of the Bronze Age
Hidden in the heart of Nørreskoven on Als, an old stone bridge holds a fascinating detail. Den Grønne Bro was built around 1785, but one of its large granite stones bears marks from a much earlier period.
Take a closer look at the stones when you visit. One of them features cup marks dating back to the Bronze Age. These small, man-made hollows in the stone offer a glimpse into human activity thousands of years ago.
The granite stones used to build the bridge may originally have come from one of the many ancient burial chambers in Nørreskoven.
A bridge with more than 200 years of history
Den Grønne Bro crosses Grønnebækken, close to where the tree known as Den lodne bøg once stood. Built from large granite slabs, the bridge has been part of the forest's history for more than 200 years.
In July 2013, the bridge collapsed and was subsequently restored. To protect it from large, heavy vehicles, its width was reduced to a maximum of 2.3 metres.
The origin of the bridge's name remains uncertain. According to Naturstyrelsen, it may have been named after a local man called Grøn.
