Christmas in the castle courtyard and historic rooms

From 4 to 6 December 2026, the castle Sønderborg Slot hosts a Christmas market with more than 80 exhibitors. Browse the stalls in front of the castle, around the courtyard and inside its historic rooms.

Discover Christmas decorations and seasonal treats, while festive huts, a Christmas tree and visits from Father Christmas add to the seasonal atmosphere at the castle.

New experiences for children in 2026

For the first time, Sønderborg Slot is opening two new spaces for children, young people and families during the Christmas market.

In the dressing-up room Hertugens klædeskab, children can dress up in ducal costumes. At the children’s workshop Børneværkstedet, families can make traditional Danish and German Christmas decorations.

You can also visit the castle’s exhibitions and discover the history of the border region.

Food and drink

Take a break at the food stalls, where you can try local specialities including the traditional sausage ringriderpølser, gløgg and the Danish Christmas treat æbleskiver. The castle café serves coffee, homemade cakes from Sønderjylland and other specialities.

Practical information

The Christmas market is not wheelchair accessible.

Dogs are welcome in the area in front of the castle but are not permitted beyond the castle gates. Assistance dogs are permitted inside the castle on presentation of appropriate documentation.

The car park in front of Sønderborg Slot will be unavailable from 1 to 7 December 2026.

Not all exhibitors accept card payments, so you may wish to bring some cash.
