Knivsbjergfest
Knivsbjergfest - a festive gathering at the heart of Sønderjylland.
Every year at the end of July, Knivsbjergfest takes place on Sønderjylland’s highest point – Knivsbjerg.
For many locals, Knivsbjerg is synonymous with Knivsbjergfest – a recurring summer celebration between Aabenraa and Haderslev.
The festival gathers thousands of guests each year for a day filled with sports, culture, and community in the beautiful Sønderjylland countryside.
It’s a celebration rich in tradition, dating all the way back to 1894. Knivsbjergfest is one of the oldest and most significant traditions of the German minority in Denmark.
Originally a national celebration with strong symbolic meaning – including a large Bismarck tower that was later destroyed in 1945 – the festival is now an open and inclusive gathering that celebrates culture, unity, and diversity.
It’s a free, family-friendly event.
At Knivsbjergfest, you can experience: stunning nature, live music, children’s activities, and a wide range of sports tournaments, including football, handball, beach volleyball, and Faustball.
You’ll also find theatre, dancing, bingo, a traditional coffee table, and an evening party in large tents.
It’s especially ideal for families with children, as there are many free and fun activities like bouncy castles, a large kids’ tent, and bread-on-a-stick over open fire.
Children, youth, families, and seniors from both the German minority and from across Denmark and South Schleswig come together here.
Knivsbjergfest is a vibrant cultural gathering where you can enjoy play, history, and relaxation. With views of the fjord and surrounded by forest, it’s a festive and informal day in nature.
The event is organised by the German Youth Association for North Schleswig (DJN) – but everyone is welcome, regardless of language, age, or background.
Knivsbjergfest is a strong symbol of good neighbourship and cultural unity in the border region.
Parking: Free shuttle buses typically run from Genner to Knivsbjerg. Parking in Genner is also free.
