Light celebration at Sønderborg Barracks

The windows are lit with 1018 candles and our beautiful Dannebrog is hoisted up in the illuminated flag tower.

There is a very special atmosphere on the evening of 4 May at Sønderborg Barracks, when the windows are illuminated by candlelight to commemorate the liberation of Denmark in May 1945.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the legendary BBC broadcast on 4 May from London, where Johannes Gunnar Sørensen announced that the Germans had surrendered in Holland, North West Germany and Denmark, from 5 May at 8am English double summer time.

We celebrate this at the Barracks, with candles in the windows - a total of 1018 candles - and illuminated Dannebrog hoisted in the flag tower.

At 17:00, the evening begins in the former gymnasium, now known as Salen, where there will be Al-sang (community singing) as it was during the occupation, led by Sønderjysk Sangcenter. Dinner will also be organised in Salen - The event in Salen costs DKK 150 per person and registration is by payment no later than 24 April to the Contact Committee's account: Reg. No. 7931 Account no.: 1192615

At 20:15 we will gather in the barracks yard ready to listen to the BBC broadcast as it could be heard on the evening of 4 May 1945.

At 21.00, the many candles are lit.

At 22.30 the candles are extinguished and a bagpipe plays from the barracks' flag tower.

At 23.00 there will be a fireworks display from the sergeant school's former sports ground.

You can find the full programme for the evening in Danish under Download.

NB. On 5 May from 08:00 to 10:30, there is a separate programme - read more about the 5 May celebrations.
