There is a very special atmosphere on the evening of 4 May at Sønderborg Barracks, when the windows are lit by candles in memory of Denmark’s liberation in May 1945.
4 May holds a very special significance in Denmark, as it marks the day of the legendary BBC broadcast on 4 May 1945 from London, in which Johannes Gunnar Sørensen announced that the Germans had surrendered in the Netherlands, north-west Germany and Denmark, effective from 8 am on 5 May, British Double Summer Time.
This is commemorated every year at Kasernen, with candles in the windows – a total of 1,018 candles – and an illuminated Dannebrog hoisted in the flag tower.
At 8.30 pm, we gather in the barracks courtyard, ready to listen to the BBC broadcast as it was heard on the evening of 4 May 1945.
At 9.00 pm, the many candles will be lit.
At 10.30 pm, the lights will be extinguished.
Everyone is welcome to drop by the barracks in Sønderborg on the evening of Monday 4 May 2026 – whether by car, bicycle or on foot.
In the barracks courtyard, you will also be able to meet the Als Veterans’ Club, who will be present before and during the lighting of the candles. Here, you will have the opportunity to buy a cup of coffee and at the same time support the Julemærkehjemmet Fjordmark children’s home.
